25 Years Studying Small Mammal Socio-Ecology in a Biodiversity Hotspot
The Succulent Karoo Research Station (SKRS) was founded in 2001 as a base for organismal research in this biodiversity hotspot. For a quarter of a century, it increased our ecological understanding of the Succulent Karoo via its ground-breaking research in eco-physiology and behavioural ecology of small mammals. During a two days symposium we want to review past, current and future research at SKRS (day 1) and show how this contributes to a better understanding of the ecology, evolution, and management of this biodiversity hotspot (day2).
Location: Conference facility in Goegap Nature Reserve.
Date: Thursday 30th October and Friday 31st October (2 days). Starting at 9:00 and finishing at 17:00
Day 1 (Thursday 30th October): Presentations by researchers and students working at SKRS. We will present the most important research that was conducted in the fields of behavioural ecology on small mammals in the last 25 years and its impact on the international scientific community.
Day 2 (Friday 31st October): Presentations by researchers and by nature conservationists about the Succulent Karoo biodiversity hotspot with a focus on small mammals and their impact on this ecosystem.
Registration: To register, send an email to [email protected]. Please note that number of attendees is limited. You will be notified via email whether your registration was successful.
If you would like to present a talk or a poster at the symposium, please include an abstract of a maximum of 250 words into your email. We are especially interested in presentations by colleagues working in nature conservation in the Succulent Karoo (day 2).
Registration fee: Attendance is free, including coffee breaks, but registration is mandatory.
Deadlines: Registering before the 15th of March 2025 gives you the best chance to be registered for participation. We will have a second call in March/ April and a third call in July if we still have free places by then.
Accommodation: Goegap Nature Reserve (Tel: 027 718 9906/027 718 9907; Email: [email protected]) offers camping, bush huts, chalets and a group camp for very competitive prices of 100-200 Rand per person and night. Springbok, only 15kms away from the conference facility, offers a broad range of accommodation in guest houses, guest farms and hotels starting at approximately R1000/night for two persons. Look for example here or on any online booking system.
Visit of the Succulent Karoo Research Station and the field site: During the afternoon of each day, we will organise a visit of SKRS and its field site. A maximum of 12 people can visit SKRS on one afternoon. Please indicate in your email whether you want to join one visit. If demand is high, we will add a third visit for local people on Wednesday before the symposium.
Braai: On Friday evening we will have a braai at SKRS. The area can accommodate a maximum of 30 people. Please indicate in your email whether you want to participate to the braai.
